Why White Fillings?

The composite resin(also known as white composite, tooth composite, and dental bonding) can be chosen to match the color of your teeth. This allows Dr. Spinner to perform repairs while keeping the overall appearance of your smile intact. The composite is bonded to your tooth, so the repaired tooth will be even stronger than it originally was.

This is the same substance as is used in Dental Bonding. It’s a malleable, adaptable white compound and the term Dental Bonding is used for both the substance and the procedures which use it.

Porcelain can also be chosen to match your tooth enamel. You can read more on our Porcelain Fillings page.

The Drawbacks of Metal Amalgam

  • Appearance – Metal amalgam is gray to begin with and darkens as it ages. At no time does it ever look attractive or remotely like your natural teeth.
  • Mercury – Just like the way a thermometer works, mercury expands and contracts with the hot and cold substances placed in the mouth. This constant changing can cause a fracture that will require a crown to preserve the tooth.
  • Weakening – metal amalgam fillings exert a continual outward pressure on the tooth’s periphery. Because they are not bonded to the tooth, they have to be packed in the cavity very tightly, and the cavity has to be shaped to hold them in. This often requires drilling of healthy tooth tissue.

At Smile Solutions, we prefer not to subject our patients to any unnecessary risk. We offer to replace your old metal fillings either with porcelain inlays or onlays, or with white composite fillings. That will do great things for you smile.
