Many of our Long Island patients choose dental implants to restore a single tooth or several missing teeth. Some even choose to have a full mouth restoration with dental implants rather than use removable dentures. Read more to learn what dental implants are and if you might be a candidate.

What are Dental Implants?
A tooth implant is an artificial tooth root that provides an anchor for an artificial tooth, or crown. Unlike dentures or bridges, implants involve placing one or more artificial tooth roots where teeth are missing. The root implants are small cylinders made of titanium, a material that fuses well with bone.

Dental Implant Procedure
The process to plan dental implants only takes two visits after your initial consultation with Dr. Spinner.

• In the first visit, the implant is put in place surgically. It will need about three months, sometimes more, to fuse with the bone in your jaw, a process known as osseointegration. This creates a strong foundation for the new tooth or teeth.
• During your second visit, about three months after the first, the new artificial tooth, or crown, is permanently attached to the implant. The final result is a new and strongly supported tooth that is color-matched to the surrounding teeth.

Implants are incredibly durable and will look and feel like your natural teeth. In addition to having a beautiful and complete smile again, you will be able to eat all of your favorite foods like corn on the cob without worrying about your teeth moving or falling out.

Who is a candidate?
If you have a tooth or teeth missing and you meet the following criteria, you are most likely a candidate for dental implants. The only way to know for sure is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Spinner to discuss your unique circumstances.

• Non-Smoker
• Not diabetic
• Is in good health overall
• Has healthy gums
• Has sufficient jawbone
• Has strong immune system
